Neurodivergent & Autistic Patients
How we support patients with additional needs
Supporting Patients With Additional Needs
At TSa Dental Care we understand that our neurodivergent patients may require additional support during their dental treatment. All our staff receive training in assisting those with autism and learning difficulties. We encourage those with additional needs to let our reception team know upon booking their appointment. This enables us to make any necessary adjustments. These can include:
- Longer appointment times.
- Arranging an appointment at a quieter time of day (first or last appointment of the day).
- Turning off radios for those sensitive to noise.
- Pre-warning the dentist about sensory issues so they know what to avoid.
- Arranging a ‘pre-appointment visit’ so you can familiarise yourself with the practice environment beforehand.
Autism Social Story
We have put together an ‘Autism Social Story’ to help our patients with autism navigate their visit to the dental practice. This document outlines what will happen in a patient’s appointment.
The social story is written for children, but adults may also find it helpful to look through before their appointment.

Things you can do to feel more comfortable at the dentist
- Bring headphones to listen to your favourite music during your treatment and whilst you are waiting.
- Bring sunglasses to block out the dentist's bright light.
- Bring a fidget/stim toy to play with to help you stay calm.
- Bring a weighted blanket to lay over yourself during treatment.
- Bring a phone or tablet so you can watch your favourite TV show or film during your treatment. Don't forget your headphones.
- Ask a family member or friend to accompany you to your appointment for moral support.
